The Introduction to Motivational Interviewing course is an 8-hour Introduction course and is recommended for staff who have not previously taken Motivational Interviewing. This curriculum teaches staff how to effectively work with involuntary clients using Motivational Interviewing in a probation or correctional setting. The curriculum also covers the following areas: Introduction to the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing (Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Evocation), The Communication Skills of Motivational Interviewing (Open Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summarizations), How to develop discrepancy, How to Evoke for Change Talk, and How to Support Self Efficacy (DERS) throughout each of the Stages of Change. This course also includes a comprehensive practice of the skills of responding to sustain talk, discord, and evoking change talk.
